Movie Plot: Kate and John Coleman’s marriage is tense after the stillbirth of their third child, Jessica, whose loss is particularly difficult on Kate, who is also recovering from alcoholism. The couple adopt esther, a nine-year-old Russian girl from the local orphanage. While his five-year-old deaf-mute daughter Max embraces Esther almost immediately, his 12-year-old son Daniel welcomes less. Kate bonds with Esther as she teaches her piano, and coincides with John.
One night, John and Kate had sex but were interrupted by Esther. Kate gets sceptical when Esther is more aware of sex than a child of her age, but John asks her not to worry about it. Soon, Esther demonstrated hostile behavior, killed an injured pigeon and injured a classmate in the park while advancing Kate’s disbelief.
